Five people applied for jobs at a store. Only two of these five people will be hired. How many
different pairs of people could be hired? Show your work or explain how you know.

  1. First, you match the numbers up.

    1 and 2/3/4/5=4 pairs
    2 and 3/4/5=3 pairs
    3 and 4/5=2 pairs
    4 and 5=1 pair

    Then you add the numbers.

    4+3+2+1=10 pairs

    If you did everything right, you will have the answer, which is 10 different pairs of people.
