September Raffle Ticket

Well it is back by popular demand!!!

This is the September raffle ticket problem!! 

Find a solution to the problem below and write out your work clearly,  post it on the blog and you could win!

This one hits unit 1.1 in 8th grade- Everyone should be able to figure it out though! Give it a try!

Three watermelons and two cantaloupes weigh 32 pounds. Four watermelons and three cantaloupes weigh 44 pounds. All watermelons weigh the same and all cantaloupes weigh the same. What is the weight of two watermelons and one cantaloupe?

    3w+2c = 32
    4w+3c = 44
    ---------------------------
    difference is 12.
    so um 2w+1c = 32-12
    -------------------
    anwser is: 2w+1c = 20

  2. i had to retype all of this because it deleted it. umm this might be wrong:

    so 3w+ 2c = 32
    4w+ 3c = 44
    -------------------------
    the difference is (+) 12
    so 2w+1c = 32 - 12
    ------------------
    the answer is : 2w+1c = 20

    8*3=24
    4*2=8

    8*2=16
    4*1=4
    16+4=20

    The answer would be 20 pounds.
    Two watermelons= 16 pounds
    One cantalope= 4 pounds

  5. It would be 18 pounds for 2 watermelons and 1 cantaloupe. 10.5 pounds for one watermelon, and 7.5 pounds for 1 cantaloupe.

  7. Two watermelon and one cantaloupe weigh 20 pounds in all because one cantaloupe weighs 4 pounds and 2 watermelon weigh 16 punds so 16+4=20 pounds in all.
    I solved the problem by using substitution. I wrote out 3w=2c=32 but changed it into mx=b by doing 2c=-3w+32.
    Then the second equation was 4w+3c=44.
    For the first equation i figured out c by dividing 2 on both sides so it equaled c=-1.5w+16. Then i inserted that into the other quation so 4w=3(-1.5w+16)=44 then i did the distributive property and it was 4w-4.5w+48=44. I subtracted on both sides and ended up with -.5w=-4. I then divided by -.5 on both sides and figured out w=8. Then i inserted 8=w into the first equation and c ennded up equaling 4. So then you do w*2=16 pounds +1c= 20 pounds in all
